September 25, 2003 | Frozen Goat Surprise
The frozen goat meat display in Hannaford's supermarket off I-295 in Portland, Maine
We were on a mission. We had to find some farmer's cheese so my mom could make blintzes for the Yom Kippur break the fast. Doubling back to Portland after stopping at L.L. Bean for Bean Boots (for Margaret) and flannel lined pants (for Karl), we pulled off I-295 and pulled into the parking lot of a giant Hannaford supermarket. I ran inside while Margaret waited with Godfrey. Running back and forth between the dairy aisle and the deli section, a sign over a giant white cooler caught my eye: Frozen Goat Meat.
Inside were packages of meat, all labeled in a very unofficial hand scrawled manner. It wasn't all goat. There was some rabbit and even a shrink wrapped lamb's head, I think. But sure enough, right there on top, was a packaged labeled "Goat." No indication what cut of meat or what part of the goat, but it was goat. Where did it come from? Who was it for? If the store had had some farmer's cheese, I might have bought myself a package of frozen goat, just for curiosity's sake. But after failing in my quest for the cheese, it was getting late and I felt compelled to avoid the long check-out lines and just head back to the lake empty handed, but full of questions for the next time we find ourselves at the Portland Hannaford supermarket. — KS
